No slackers, these dogs pull 80 times their weight at the Houston World Series of Dog Shows.
And don’t ever count the little guys out.


HOUSTON, TXWeight Pull makes its return to the 42nd annual Houston World Series of Dog Shows, happening in Houston’s NRG Center, July 17-21, 2019. In the Weight Pull competition, Alaskan malamutes and other dogs of all sizes and breeds pull carts outweighing them sometimes several times over. Fitted with special harnesses, the dogs have 60 seconds to pull weighted carts across a 16-foot course. The winner is the dog able to pull the heaviest cart in his weight category at the fastest clip.


This event will take place on only three of the Shows’ five days. Malamute-only trials occur Friday, July 19, from 7 to 8 p.m. Trials that any dog can enter run Saturday, July 20, and Sunday, July 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dog owners can preregister for any of these events by downloading the form at www.houstondogshows.com/visitors/ under the  “Events Any Dog Can Enter” section and mailing a $15 fee per dog.  Fees must be received by July 19.  Walkup registration is also possible up to 30 minutes prior to the start of the competition at a cost of $20 per dog.

Attendees may bring their dogs to the Shows, especially to fit their pets for custom clothing, collars or leashes or participate in public events as long as they follow show rules appearing at:  https://www.houstondogshows.com/visitors#faq.


General show hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Tickets are available at the door. Admission is free to the public on Wednesday, July 17. On Thursday, July 18, tickets are $10 for adults, and Friday through Sunday adult tickets are $15. Seniors older than 55 and active/retired military with ID pay only $10. Children 12 and younger are free with purchase of an adult ticket. Parking is $15 daily, cash only.


The Houston World Series of Dog Shows is sanctioned by the American Kennel Club and supervised by Onofrio Dog Shows. During their five-day span, the shows typically attract more than 40,000 spectators and participants and 14,000 entries.
